Winter Solstice and the Day Traditions Shifted

Winter Solstice is a big deal in our family.

We all gather at our Big House and aren’t scattered at other family gatherings. We spend a month jiggling schedules around so that the date works for everyone. In 2014, we are 24 in our nuclear family – 12 adults and 12 grandchildren

Members who will be celebrating Christmas/Yule with other families bring their Secret Santa gifts and it is always a toss up if they will open them while gathered together this night or wait for Christmas day.

Two dear Fairy Children Granddaughters have their birthdays in Dec. -one one the 15th and one on the 18th and sometimes we celebrate their birthdays all together at Solstice with birthday cakes and presents amongst the holiday cakes, cookies, and presents.

Holiday Thriving- Just Be Still

We are a busy culture – especially now around the Holidays we are rushing, rushing, rushing.

As a culture, we like things to be fast. We like things to get results. This fast pace of our culture seduces us into moving fast in order to keep up.

We each have our own personal rhythm. And we all have a shared biological rhythm. CARDAMOM ROLLS

Winter is ideal time for baking. Here is a favourite recipe of one of my Woman As Shaman Initiates for dinner rolls.

CARDAMOM ROLLS
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups milk (I like to use nut milk)
1 1/2 cups melted butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. freshly ground cardamom (from about 25 cardamom pods)
2 pkg. dry active yeast (4 1/2 tsp.)
8-9 cups all purpose or bread flour
Heat milk to a light boil. Stir in melted butter, sugar, salt, and ground cardamom. Let mixture cool until it reaches the same temperature as your body. Add yeast into the mixture.
Into a separate bowl add flour. Then add the milk mixture into the flour. Knead until dough is firm and pulls away from the side of your mixing […]
