Winter Solstice and the Day Traditions Shifted

Winter Solstice is a big deal in our family.

We all gather at our Big House and aren’t scattered at other family gatherings. We spend a month jiggling schedules around so that the date works for everyone. In 2014, we are 24 in our nuclear family – 12 adults and 12 grandchildren

Members who will be celebrating Christmas/Yule with other families bring their Secret Santa gifts and it is always a toss up if they will open them while gathered together this night or wait for Christmas day.

Two dear Fairy Children Granddaughters have their birthdays in Dec. -one one the 15th and one on the 18th and sometimes we celebrate their birthdays all together at Solstice with birthday cakes and presents amongst the holiday cakes, cookies, and presents.

Every one […]

Winter Solstice Lanterns

During Winter Solstice consider not using any artificial light for the entire day. Enjoy the darkness and celebrate it by lighting candles or your Solstice Lanterns!

In order to make them get a jar and decorate by gluing on bits of dry leaves and other materials gathered in nature, then use some wire to make a handle. Make many of these and put them all around your house.

Holiday Thriving- Just Be Still

We are a busy culture – especially now around the Holidays we are rushing, rushing, rushing.

As a culture, we like things to be fast. We like things to get results. This fast pace of our culture seduces us into moving fast in order to keep up.

We each have our own personal rhythm. And we all have a shared biological rhythm. Scientists have found that the planet earth resonates at about 7.83 cycles per second – the pulse or the heartbeat of the earth itself. And – it is no coincidence – our bodies resonate at this very same rhythm – 7.83 cycles per second. When we are in a state of deep engagement, our brain waves pulse at 7.83 […]

The Training ~ Descending to Emerge: Journey 2

Read Arriving Back on Avalon Descending To Emerge Journey 1 here

I have left the Caverns under the Tor and am desperately tired but in haste to make my way back to The Tor as I have such a great calling within to be there.

I arrive at the markers for the Dragon ley lines and there she is The Moon Dragon waiting for me. She smiles – she is very old but every flexible. She hands me my Staff and I begin the ascent up the hill.

I tell her I am tired and she just smiles and hastens several very small dragons to come along with me. It is dark and cold. But I have on my Glamour cloak […]

Olive Oil Lamp for the Holidays

“And you shall command the people of Israel that they bring to you pure beaten olive-oil for the light, that a lamp may be set to burn continually”. Exodus 27:20

I made my olive oil lamp – love it.

First I started with a nice container and used a cloth wick and a bit of olive oil. Once the wick was saturated it burned nicely. Then I realized that I could just use one of the many oil lamps I have which I never […]

CARDAMOM ROLLS

Winter is ideal time for baking. Here is a favourite recipe of one of my Woman As Shaman Initiates for dinner rolls.

CARDAMOM ROLLS
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups milk (I like to use nut milk)
1 1/2 cups melted butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. freshly ground cardamom (from about 25 cardamom pods)
2 pkg. dry active yeast (4 1/2 tsp.)
8-9 cups all purpose or bread flour
Heat milk to a light boil. Stir in melted butter, sugar, salt, and ground cardamom. Let mixture cool until it reaches the same temperature as your body. Add yeast into the mixture.
Into a separate bowl add flour. Then add the milk mixture into the flour. Knead until dough is firm and pulls away from the side of your mixing […]

Arriving Back on Avalon ~Descending to Emerge: Journey 1

I am crossing over the lake in the Barge. It has been a long time since I have been on Avalon as I have been away on a mission in the Outer World. Always with Avalon with me though.

When I step out of the Barge my Guide is there to greet me. She is happy to see me (although we have not been separated). She hands me a warm cup of herbal mixture – tasting good even though I don’t usually like these drinks.

I know I am going right off to the Tor. And we start walking in that direction. It is night.

I pass by the Dragon line markers and deliberately make my way to the top of the Tor. My Guide stays with me.

At […]

Winter Prayer

Winter Prayer
“We give thanks for the blessing of winter:
Season to cherish the heart.
To make warmth and quiet for the heart.
To make soups and broths for the heart.
To cook for the heart and read for the heart.
To curl up softly and nestle with the heart.
To sleep deeply and gently at one with the heart.
To dream with the heart.
To spend time with the heart.
A long, long time of peace with the heart.
We give thanks for the blessing of winter:
Season to cherish the heart.
Amen”

Farewell Evenstar Herbs

She bore the “Evenstar”, as the most beautiful of the last generation of High Elves in Middle-Earth.

When I founded Evenstar Herbs back in 1987, commercial herbal products were just peeking out from behind closed doors. There were no giant herb companies and grocery and drug stores did not have herbal products on the counter. Evenstar began as small family owned and family run business. We gathered all of our herbs by hand and made all of our herbal products patiently and precisely according to traditional ways.

For many years we have been very much a traditional herbal company and making all of our herbal products in the traditional ways ourselves. From our Virginia gardens, we gather many of our herbs and we still formulate our herbal […]
